Reality
Reality hit us when one of our close friends tested positive for Covid19. He encouraged us to ask any questions that we had. My only question was, "Are you scared?" He wasn't. But, I was. I have always been a strong advocate for everyone but myself, so he was reacting precisely how I would likely react. I just hope I don't have to prove it. His test was travel related and now he has recovered.
Manitoba has been blessed that we have relatively few cases. This is just due to our aggressive social distancing. It isn't easy. It is hard on everyone. We are all struggling together. One thing that is clear that no matter what happens, once this is all over, Those that have more will have to pay more. Our economy will never recover unless the top 10% or even the top 1% need to give their wealth to our country. There is going to be some permanent job losses. People are already reframing their retirement. I used to dream about a cruise around the world. Somehow I don't think that will ever be an option anymore. I am hugger. I don't know if I will be able to hug as many people as I did.
The public health professionals of the Government of Canada released some projections today. This is not going to resolve quickly. However, currently, our fatality rate in Canada is just a little over 1%. That is a testament to our medical system and also our vigilance as well as our overall health. In Africa, by contrast, there has been 10,000 cases with 5,000 deaths. Sobering. 50% death rate.
Ironically, viruses usually leave the Earth when there is enough people infected and recovered so in that way, the rate of immunity in the community reaches a point where the virus peters out. We are not able to do this with Covid19 because of its lethality. So, we are stuck. At home. And, it is difficulty
Our political leaders are really doing the best they can. Our public health officials are as well. There will be time enough for review once this is over. There are always things that we can learn and do better. Andrew Scheer needs to just be quiet. No one wants to listen to him. I know he won't resign as MP because he has never had a job, however he needs to just stop talking. The NDP party is doing a good job both provincially and federally of just offering support of people and alerting the media of some groups that they have not been getting air time. The provincial Liberals are claiming to be a reasonable voice but they are just taking easy political jabs and I hope it backfires.
The media is doing a great job when there is little to report. I have high expectations and look for their daily update tweets the moment it happens. But, more than ever, I am looking forward to my newspaper. Same with books. I am preferring to hold something tangible and read it. Since we can't hold each other, I am looking to physically hold wisdom and whimsy.
My friend has recovered. He is free to leave his home for essential errands like grocery shopping. There is reason to hope.
