"Where is the strong support?"
About a week ago, I blogged about the upcoming Civic Election. Turn-out in civic elections is historically abysmal so the primary purpose of the blog was to get people excited enough to vote. I also gave my thoughts on the three candidates running for election in my Ward. One of the candidates is opposed to the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre being located on the current Vimy Arena site. (The arena has been vacant 2013). The other two candidates haven't publicly gone on the record with their position on this matter, and I believe they should. I think there are many voters like me, who think how they feel about this issue is a measure of their character.
Shortly after I posted that blog, an anonymous person commented that the second candidate in the Ward was strongly supportive of BORC. Since there are three people running and one candidate just recently submitted his nomination papers, I am assuming he is the third candidate. I know one candidate who is publicly opposed to the Centre, so by process of elimination, I assume who they are referring to as the second candidate.
So, this candidate got an anonymous person to post a comment that he has been publicly supportive of the Centre from the beginning. I don't know about you, but I always take anonymous comments with a grain of salt. I worked for over a decade with the Children's Aid Society. We would never reveal a source of a referral that we received, but we also found that anonymous referrals were a waste of time as they were usually made by a spiteful ex, a feuding neighbour, or someone else with an ax to grind and wanting to make someone's life miserable. Our involvement usually made the situation worse as the person would assume who was the source, and also it took valuable time away from children who were in serious need of protection.
Anyway, this anonymous source told me that the candidate was strongly supportive of the Centre. Even though I had already viewed his social media, I did another search. I could not find any evidence of this strong support. It made me wonder if he was, like many "white people", supportive of the Centre just as long as it wasn't at the closed Vimy Arena sits or anywhere in a residential site? If this candidate is supportive of BORC, then he should be proud of that support and it should appear on his website.
Also, this lack of public support makes me wonder if he has two positions depending on which group he is talking about.
Or maybe his "strong support" is the same "strong support" my mother gave me when I had two little babies. My mother would come to provide me with help and strong support. She would clean every inch of my home. She couldn't understand why I didn't appreciate her strong support. Well, with her cleaning, she would rearrange every room so I couldn't find anything. She would throw out things that didn't fit with her decor plans and replace them with things that were her vision. It made me feel uncomfortable in my own home. I appreciated her support but what I really wanted was for her to take my babies out for a walk to the park so I could have a nap.
I also had a co-worker who gave me strong support for a project I was involved with. Truth be told, he wanted to be the leader on the project and wasn't happy that I got the assignment. So, he was present to lend his "strong support" on the project but he never asked how he could help or what I needed. It turned out that every time he was present, my boss would call me into her office to deal with the complaints he made about how I was handling the project. If that was "strong support", I would have gladly passed on it.
Of course, I likely am wrong and I have just missed this strong support. There is an event coming up on Friday, August 31 from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the Vimy Arena site in support of BORC. I'm sure those who are strongly supportive of BORC at this site will be there to show their strong support.
