Why do we give our money to people who don't like us?
Why do we give money to businesses that don't like us? Not only do they not like us, they have no desire to interact with us.
This picture is A and W is advertising a new burger and is also encouraging us to order via Skip the Dishes. Don't get me wrong, Skip the Dishes is a great company. They saved our Santa Claus parade. They obviously found a serious niche within our population. Who hasn't had a bad day and wanted to get in comfy pjs at 5 pm and spend the evening binge watching netflix. It is an added bonus that you don't even have to open the fridge and get your local faves delivered to you at the door.
And, that is how it starts. You have a bad day. You use Skip and it is efficient and easy. Then, you are a little hooked. You start using Skip several times a week.
It seems like a win/win. Well, it is certainly a win for Skip the Dishes. Their business is thriving. It is a win for the food establishment. They can sell their product without interacting with you. It is not a win for society. Because they interact with you less, the food establishments can hire less wait staff and less bus staff. They need less staff in the kitchen because there are no dishes to watch. Also, it encourages us to hibernate in our homes and not to interact with people. It is a small thing, but, these all add up to big deals. We are losing our ability to have conversations with one another. My phone is now giving me weekly stats on how much screen time I have. I don't like it. We don't have relationships anymore. We have screen time. Have you been to a McDonald's lately? They have less seating options and they have these high round stools for those who chose to eat there. They are not exactly inviting. I think they are also wanting to discourage you from hanging around. They used to be hang-outs for regular seniors to meet after their morning walks. Now, they are also encouraging you to buy their product through Skip the Dishes. They don't really want to see you. Even if you have the nerve to come in, they have mobile ordering and payment so they don't need to talk to you. If you have the McD's app, you can pre-order before you even get there and get deals. Again, they really don't want to interact with you. They can't even be bothered giving your ketchup anymore. It is at the drink station. Go away. That is the message they give you.
Why are we continuing to give our money to large chains who don't even like us? Next time, find a local restaurant where they are proud of their products and want to see you. Experience what it is like to have a business actually want you to return, and to return with friends. Remember, friends? People you spend time with?
And, there is even another option. You can cook a meal. Usually in less time than it will take Skip to come to your door. Try going a month without patronizing a restaurant and only put things in your mouth that you have created. You likely will feel a little better and you likely will notice a few extra dollars in your bank account. Now, that is a win/win.
