Coming out Loud and Clear

The Loud House.  It is an animated show aimed at an audience of preteen viewers.  It follows Lincoln Loud and his 10 sisters along with their parents.  Every member of the family has a first name that starts with L, so there are 13 L. Louds.  Each of the 10 sisters has a unique interest that defines them.  The show doesn't do much for me, and that is ok, because it is not designed to do anything for me.

Yesterday, the television was on as background noise and I was drawn to watching an episode of The Loud House.   Yes, I was drawn to it.  It was not like I was procrastinating from doing housework.  I was drawn to it.

The episode I watched showed all Loud children having a crush on someone.  The plot was complicated and I can't get into all the intricate twists and turns, however, one of the sisters, Luna Loud (the rock musician) had her crush on fellow rock musician, Sam.  Luna felt that Sam was so cool but out of her league.  We saw Sam in amongst other band members.  Sam, indeed, looked cool.  The other Louds encouraged Luna and built her up.  Luna was cool as well.  Luna, buoyed by the pep talks by her siblings, decided to give Sam an anonymous letter.  Luna placed the letter is Sam's locker and waited to watch Sam's reaction.  Sam had a positive reaction and that is also when the audience learned that Sam was actually short for Samantha.  Luna Loud is a lesbian.

No fan fare.  No preparation that this was going to happen.  Pre-teens were watching this episode with no additional warnings for parents.

We have come such a long way in a generation.  Ellen Degeneres was the first major star to come out on national tv.  There was so much speculation in the weeks leading up to the announcement.  Will she or won't she?  That was the question on the cover of many magazines.  And then, it was followed by "Yup, I'm gay."  The queen of the media, Oprah Winfrey, played the therapist on that episode.  It was a big deal.  Ellen led the way.

And, that started a wave.  More entertainers.  Athletes.  Politicians.  Clergy.  Newscasters.  Neighbours.  Family members.  Legislation changed to reflect that it is ok to love whoever you want to love.

And then it was no big deal.  I remember when Clay Aitken came out and shocked approximately 2 people.  It was no big deal.

It is no big deal.  What the world needs now is love, sweet love.  No, not just for some, but for everyone.  I've heard those words before in a song, but they are profound and true.

There is so much negativity out there.  There is so much that we are fighting about or disagreeing.  Society is becoming polarizing.  We are forgetting to love each other.

But, then there is Luna Loud crushing on Samantha.  It reminds us that love is touching and profound.  The future will be fine.
