Where Scheer Went Wrong
Well, first of all, he joined the Young Conservatives. I don't know this for sure, but I know the Young Conservatives and how they operate. There is nothing about Andrew Scheer that doesn't reek Young Conservative.
The YCs attract book smart young men who have been bullied most of their lives. They join and suddenly they are connected to other young men who understand them They now feel like the cool kids. They feel accepted in a way they haven't in any other peer group. They feel powerful and that feeling is pretty wonderful. They suddenly feel that they want this feeling to last forever. They volunteer, they help with campaigns, and they decide they are good at it, and they want to become politicians. Most successful politicians are successful because there is usually a cause or some action of government that ignites their passion and pushes them to run for public office. When the going gets rough, and it always will at some points, the successful politicians have some inner passion, a reminder of why they got into this game, that they can draw on for inspiration to keep going. People who are career politicians, like Andrew Scheer, don't have that same sense of passion. They didn't get into politics to help others, they got into it as a career path. You just look at Scheer. Even when he is passionate, he never looks passionate. He couldn't lead a bunch of Winnipeggers to a slurpee. You can't lead if you are uninspired.
You can say what you want about Brian Mulroney, but he had that inner passion. I remember he was at a public appearance and was being heckled. He took off his tie and jacket and called that guy up and debated with him. He never changed the heckler's mind but Mulroney always seemed to have time and passion.
Andrew Scheer is just beige. There is something about his that just gives most people the willies. People that have met him have said that he is one of the most unphotogenic people ever. He looks better in person. Well, that is possible, however, if he really wanted to be elected, he would surround himself with a team that would give him useful feedback. I can tell he has surrounded himself with other grown Young Conservatives who have only told him that he is great the way he is. He appears wooden but no one has told him. Even when he is wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, he looks like he is wearing a suit. He needs to play soccer with his kids, something to make him relateable. He needs to dance on stage. He spent a lot of time before the election in commercials telling us he was relatable because his mom was a single mom and all that. Instead of telling us, he needed to show up that he was able to click on the dot that said he wasn't a robot.
It was also sad that he had no sense of humour at all. I watched the press scrum that he faced after Steven Fletcher was using recycled signs. It was a robotic response. He could have some fun with it and say, "I understand Mr. Fletcher needs all the help he can get" or there was a million responses that were funny. Same with KinsellaGate. Rather than deny, just admit you hired a company to dig up dirt on the People's Party and they apologize to your donors for wasting their money because the People's Party were such a farce that no one had to worry about them. It is actually ironic that he is in Regina, the land of the Thatcher's. Their whole modus operanti of the Thatcher's was "deny, deny, deny." Scheer denied everything which was a mistake because the things he denied were so trivial, it wouldn't have mattered, but, it left Canadians with a feeling that he could not be trusted to tell the truth.
Then, there was this old speech on Same Sex Marriage. He wouldn't talk about it. He needed to say something. He needed to say that was 12 years ago and hi views have evolved. If his views didn't evolve, then he needs to quit politics.
Then, his stand on abortion. Same thing. He should have said, regardless, of my personal feelings, I don't think anyone without a uterus has a voice into speaking on decisions regarding a women's body. Again, if his personal feelings are that strong against abortion, he shouldn't be in politics.
If anything as I watched Andrew Scheer bumble through the election, I felt really sorry for him and I feel bad that he doesn't have a career to fall back on. I actually pitied him and it didn't inspire me to want him as Prime Minister.
Mr. Scheer, it doesn't matter if the election is two years from now, or four, it will be the same outcome. You are not going to be Prime Minister. There are some shining stars in your party. Do the right thing. Resign and give your party a chance.
