Favourite Scotties Moment
Team Fleury is having a contest on twitter. Tweet them your favourite Scotties moment and one lucky fan will win an autographed jersey. What a challenge!!
My favourite Scotties moment - if only !!!! I probably have a thousand moments. I have read all the tweets that they have received and agree with every entry and remember every moment that has been tweeted. It has also been a pretty sobering slap in the face of how old I am. I have been watching and cheering since the first Scott Tournament of Hearts in 1982. I am so old that I remember when Sherry Middaugh was Sherry Scherich curling out of Saskatchewan.
Of course, I have a few moments that stick out more for me than others and I have not been a fan of all teams. However, like most curling fans, I cheer for good shots. Most often, I cheer for the underdog in all games even if they are going against my favourite team. That is why I love curling. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day. After a team wins more than one championship, I tend to not cheer for them. I don't know why that happens. No matter who wins the championship, I cry when they receive their medals and become Team Canada. In the first few times that the Scott Tournament of Hearts crowned their champion, the winning skip would give a speech at a lectern. The speeches were all bad but they were all filled with the emotion of a speech accepting an Oscar.
I can't tell you the name of one Miss Canada but I can probably recite in almost perfect order all winning skips for the last 39 years.
But, my favourite moment. Well, there is no one favourite moment, but, Sandra Schmirler. Everything about her. She was a once in a century player that transformed the game. The first rock star. She did for curling what Wayne Gretzky has done for hockey or what Tiger Woods did for the sport of golf. Plus, the most amazing personality that was both larger than life but always humble and grounded. And, she came from Biggar, the very place where my parents met and fell in love. Every time she was on the ice was a special moment. There will never be another one like her.
And she was wonderful enough on her own, but Team Schmirler was amazing. Loved watching that team. There was just something about the team. Something that you can't describe. If she had lived and if the team was still playing, I would still be cheering. The one team that I never stopped cheering for no matter how much they won. There was something about Marcia, Joan, Jan, and Sandra together that made the sum of the whole greater than the sum of the parts. They all shone.
There was just something about the team. I went through many a Kreugar product crying with joy over Team Schmirler. I didn't think I would ever find another team that would fill that specific void again.
But, I am starting to develop a devotion to Team Einarson. It didn't happen immediately when the team formed, but as they grow, they are getting more and more special. The chemistry continues to grow and as a result, every member seems to be growing individually and their personalities are showcased. I can tell you what I like about each one of them. I also like that one of their sponsors in the Manitoba Metis Federation. The MMF does such great work that benefits all Manitobans.
But, my favourite moment. Ugh. I guess I would like to think that my favourite Scotties moment is still to come.
Cheers.
