Et Tu......Tim Horton's?

As Canadians, we have such a diverse mosaic of cultures and climate, it is hard to find something that unites us and is uniquely Canadian.  Tim Horton's has seemed to fill that void.  The lines at the drive-thrus that seem to be on every corner prove it.  We love our Timmies.

A few years ago, I was holidaying deep in the Southern US and was ordering breakfast and was asked what I took in my coffee.  Double double was my answer and the waitress look stunned.  Another waitress walked by and said, "that is Canadian for two creams and two sugars."

Tim's is probably the first date of most couples meeting on line.  It is a nice place to meet as it is very public and busy and you don't have to endure the expense and time of a nice dinner out if there is no chemistry.

I believed their advertising of a few years ago when they told us that every cup had a story.  It suggested that most of our important moments occurred while we were having a cup of Tims.

But, even Tim's has now betrayed us.

A couple of months ago, Tim's ran an aggressive marketing campaign noting that they were now only going to have simple, pure uncomplicated lattes. All we would have to say was, I will have a latte, please.  No more skinny vanilla lattes, etc.  All lattes would not be perfectly uncomplicated.

That was a couple of months ago.

Now, they are equally aggressively marketing their "peppermint mocha lattes" just in time for the holidays.

I know this is a little thing, but I think it is indicative of something bigger.  Big business or even big business marketing think that we, the general public, are stupid.   They think we won't remember what happened two months ago and they can just change their mind at will and we will all be influenced to go out and purchase this new product even though it contradicts what they just told us.

Now, again, I realize this is a little thing, but I find it very troubling.  In Canada, it is Bay Street, in the US, it is Wall Street.  Regardless, business things that we can be manipulated so easily.  They think we don't keep track or notice their contributions.  They feel we are just puppets and they are pulling the strings.  And, I guess we let them think that by responding to all of their advertising.

This makes the latest craze of fake news make sense.  It turns out we are gullible and we will still believe !!  They are insulting us and we are rewarding them by our pocketbooks.  If we continue to allow big business to influence, can you imagine what could happen?   It might even be possible that someone with no qualifications other than being a former reality tv star could be elected as President of the United States.
