Shout Out to Jagmeet Singh
Jagmeet Singh has not had an easy ride since being elected leader of the New Democrat Party. He has had a few bumps. Now that he actually has a seat in the House of Commons, there will be more pressure on him to perform.
There is one thing about him that I have always admired about him. He seems to choose joy. He seems to always be joyful and happy and looks forward positively. The expression of joy that he showed when he won Burnaby South was awesome.
And, then he was interviewed on CBC Newsworld the next morning. Granted, he was tired and probably emotionally spent. We ask too much of our politicians. Instead of focusing on his win, the interviewer asked him about the two other by-elections. She asked him what his national focus would be as a campaigner in the upcoming election. He said affordable housing. I don't like that answer. That maybe the issue that is important in the GTA and the greater Vancouver area, but the rest of the nation has some other issues. There won't be an orange wave if he keeps the focus on housing.
Finally, the interviewer asked how we was going to rise to the challenge of being a Member of Parliament. I was disappointed in his curt cocky answer. He said he had been in the Legislature of Ontario, so I'm sure I'll figure it out.
I didn't like the answer because he clashed with what I have come to believe about Jagmeet Singh. I believe he likes to choose joy. Now, I don't know. Maybe he chooses arrogance.
Regardless, I still believe that Jagmeet Singh will be the type of leader who is going to make time with me when he is next in Winnipeg. I believe he will want to sit down with me for a blog entry. I believe that people like me matter to him. I hope that is true.
