Deep sigh ......... Steven Fletcher update ......
A week or so ago, I got a "newspaper" in the mail from Manitoba's Independent MLA, Steven Fletcher.
My first thought was why did I get this in the mail since I am not in his constituency. The first page clearly indicated it was an update on his work as an Independent MLA for his riding. This wasn't just a two page flyer, this was a full newspaper with coloured pictures and many colours including multi-coloured charts, etc. Why was I getting this? Well, it turns out, yesterday he announced he is running in the federal election for CSJAH riding. So, it turns out that the newspaper was sent to all the citizens in that federal riding. I personally think this is a breech of ethics. He is using money that has been allotted to him by the provincial government to campaign for a federal riding. If you agree that this seems unethical, I urge you to contact your MLA to refer this to the Ethics Commissioner.
And, I didn't read the whole newspaper closely, however, I did note two whole pages devoted to the site of the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre. Seriously, get over it. The date of the ground-breaking for this much needed Centre is August 28, Bruce's birthday. This is happening. Stop trying to incite people into useless action. I feel sorry for the citizen's that you riled up because I know they sustained a huge legal bill over nothing. I happen to be aware of the Friends of Bruce Oake Recovery and the first thing that happened once the last hurdle was cleared was a call for healing and reconciliation with the Friends of Sturgeon Creek. If you want to be a leader, show leadership. Take the high road and help the people opposed to understand and move on. I am deeply saddened that you are still beating this flat pancake. And, you are using our tax dollars to do this !!! Again, questionable ethics.
The one thing that I thought was positive in the newsletter was the last page with a picture of his sister and his two nephews with him. That actually made me happy for Steven. He has some positive relationships in his life. Over the past decade, we have seen him not being able to get along with most people that he interacts with. It seems he is never in favour of anything, he is most often against everything.
Yesterday, he announced he is running in the federal election for Maxime Bernier new party, PPC. Just a few months ago, Bernier announced he was not interested in any candidates outside of Quebec and now he has joined forces with Fletcher. Regardless, Fletcher announced he was running for re-election of this constituency. Again, questionable ethics. He is not the incumbent of this riding. Yes, it is true that he once represented this riding in Parliament, but re-elect sounds manipulative because everyone knows that the incumbent does have an advantage in an election. Regardless, there are already three outstanding candidates running in this constituency. He will finish fourth.
I also remember a couple of months ago, he announced he was now head of the Manitoba Party and said he would be announcing star candidates and he would have candidates running in all provincial constituencies. His whole platform seemed to be Axe the Tax. Now, that Pallister has taken this on himself, it appears he has no platform. I am still waiting for the star candidates to be announced, or, indeed anyone. Again, difficulties getting along with people. Most of the province seems to be preparing for a snap election and he is already going federal. I hope he does the ethical thing and takes a leave of absence for the time he is campaigning federally.
There is another thing that people whisper about that I think needs to be looked into. Fletcher needs 24 hour support for his health. It appears that he needs two attendants at all time. These attendants are paid for by MPI or Manitoba Health. Again, our tax dollars. I have no problem with this expense, however, I often see his attendants with clip boards to take notes, etc. I wonder if some of the attendants time are devoted to his duties as a politician. This would be unethical and not consistent with the intent. I could be entirely wrong and it is totally possible that he is also accompanied by his Constituency Manager. It is hard to tell. Anytime, I have seen him at an event, his attendants all look the same; young, attractive, female, and often blonde. Granted, I barely see him, but it makes me wonder how many males have been hired as attendants since his accident. It makes me wonder if he using an ethical lens while hiring.
Just things that make me wonder. Just things that I think someone with influence should ask. Just things that make me mad that I am wondering. I try not to waste energy on someone so negative.
