Trying to Grow As a Writer
Since I was in Grade 2, I aspired to write the Great Canadian Novel. I wanted to be a writer. It was my teacher's fault. Her name was Miss Houston and she was an amazing teacher. Strict but kind. I think she took a personal interest in me, but, perhaps she took a personal interest in all of her students at Henderson Elementary School. She lived in an apartment one block north of me on Main Street. I ran a few errands for her on occasion. She always dressed in a dress and wore pearls. I think she taught me after decades of experience. She was really wise and I was painfully shy. I remember doing a simple assignment. We had to write a letter to someone. I wrote a letter to my Auntie Madeline thanking her for hosting us at her home on our recent holiday to Vegreville. I still have that letter somewhere. Miss Houston came into class and asked me to come with her. She took me to both Grade 6 classes and I stood at the front while she read my letter. She told the students that I was going to be a great writer one day and I had talent. I felt like throwing up, but I was very encouraged. I wanted to be a writer until Grade 6. Then, I wanted to be the first female Prime Minister of Canada. Even though I never became a writer, the thought never left my mind completely. About a decade ago, I was competing in a speech contest. I didn't win but many people, including the winner, came up and told me that there was some amazing writing in the speech. One particular friend said he wrote down some of the individual lines that he thought was good writing because he wanted to have those lines to refer to. Amazing compliment. Also, more than a decade ago, I dabbled in stand-up comedy. I am obviously not a household name, so I wasn't very successful, but again, people said that some of my jokes were brilliantly written. Whether they were sincere or this was just pity compliments, I chose to believe them. I want to be a writer.
So, I started my blog two years ago. My goal was to have 100 views per day. So, going by that goal, I should have about 75, 000 views. I have about 130,000 views. I have achieved my goal. It is time to scatter some seeds and see if I can challenge myself further and grow as a writer.
I came up with the idea of theme days. I would like to post a blog each day of the week according to a different theme. This is where I need your help. I brainstormed a list of themes that I would like to blog about but there are more than seven. I welcome your feedback. What are the themes that you would read? What are the themes that you think I should choose to blog about? You can post your feedback here or send me a personal message. If you want me to just quit blogging all together, you can tell me that too, but, I'm not going to listen. I don't know how to become a writer without writing. I need to have the discipline of writing every day. If no one provides input, that is fine. I will choose. Regardless, I am going to take a week break to get a head of the game so when I come back next Sunday, hopefully, I will always be a week ahead in case of sickness, and other things that happen in life. So, here are the possible themes:
1. Small Town Values
2. Winnipeg Politics
3. Provincial, Federal, World Politics
4. Life's Like That
5. ExtraOrdinary Winnipeggers
6. Winnipeg Politicians
7. Life Lessons from Manitoba's Poker Elite
8. Employee Engagement
9. Business Commentary
10. Life Imitates Sports
11. Scattering Seeds
12. Getting Better Together
13. Laughter is Health
14. From Fatness to Fabulous
15. Mature Bridezilla
16. Addiction and Recovery
Thank you for reading over the last two years !!
