E. Jean Carroll? Still haven't heard of her?
Attention fatigue? Another thing I hadn't heard of until today. It is apparently the condition of hearing the same message over and over again so that eventually we stop listening.
It is apparently why an allegation by author E. Jean Carroll has not made front page news. No, I had never heard of her either. She was an advice columnist for Elle magazine and she has written several advice books for women. You know the type of books. How to Meet Prince Charming in 5 days or less. She alleges that Donald Trump sexually assaulted her 23 years ago at her place of employment. She made the allegation in an interview with New Yorker magazine. She is on the cover wearing what she says she was wearing on the day it happened. She has a very specific allegation and she has very specific details. It sounds credible.
President Trump denies it, no surprise. He never even met her.
Frankly, if you were a cynical person, you might question why she hasn't come forward before. Oh, and also, she is releasing a new book in July on why men are useless. This incident is discussed in further depth in new book.
So, some people suggest she is making the allegation to sell books.
However, this allegation is in New Yorker magazine. One would assume they have a vetting process and wouldn't be used as a vehicle to sell books and there has to be some substance to the allegation for them to publish.
If it was any other President, this would make headline news across the globe. But, it is Trump. There have been so many allegations and so many denials. Allegations of so many things including sexual assault. Nothing sticks. Frankly, society is exhausted. Maybe we just want to focus on the last decade.
The Canadian press focused much attention on astronaut David Saint-Jacques who is ending his six month mission at the International Space Station today. Frankly, it is interesting and something different.
Now, I understand attention fatigue. Too much of anything is too much for our brain to handle. Two summers ago, we spent a lot of time exploring Winnipeg with our grandson. There is lots to do and great places to eat. Apparently, it was too much for my perfect grandson and even though he loves french fries, he had too much and fell asleep on a plate of french fries.
It is a cute story. Falling asleep on french fries. Are we sick of hearing allegations against Trump? Absolutely. Unfortunately, the consequences of this attention fatigue are a little more serious than falling asleep on french fries. Here is hoping American voters can wake up and pay attention.
