Tip the Cage?
I'm not as complex as I think I am. I have two hobbies; blogging and poker. When blogging is going well, I blog as often as my free time allows. I am currently having an "issue" with my blog, so, I am playing more poker.
I have no illusions that I am a good poker player. I am a recreational player at best, however, I also believe I have the potential to be a good player. So, I really don't know the answer to this one and am looking for some feedback.
What is the etiquette for tipping the cashier cage?
I seriously don't know what is expected. At the casino which I play, we have only had a dedicated poker cashier cage for about a year and a half. I mention that because I find them very inefficient. They check each bill for authenticity. Then, they break down your buy-in. I know this is standard for the cameras, however, it seems a little extreme. They are extremely slow. When they first opened, I thought it was just the slow pace was extra caution from a new experience. It hasn't improved. It is very slow when you are buying chips. It is equally slow when you are cashing in chips. It is even slower if you colouring up. It doesn't seem that slow other places. Sometimes I feel like telling the cashier that I passed Grade 8 math but it doesn't feel like that comment would be appreciated.
And, that is another issue. The cashiers don't seem very friendly. Granted, I know they have a great deal of responsibility, and also, they literally work in a cage, however, they seem very bothered when they have to stand up and provide service. The staff seem to have mastered the deep sigh so that it is very subtle but noticeable. So, I have to tell you, I am not particularly motivated to tip the cage. They could definitely benefit from some customer service training.
I tip my dealer when I win a hand. I also tip the dealer when I am cashing out. I am aware those tips are shared. I also tip my serving personnel when I receive a complimentary drink. The wait staff work very hard and players always seem to be complaining about the length of time that it takes to get a free coffee. It seems pretty ironic when the players can walk only a few yards to dispense their own free coffee from a Keurig machine. I never consider not tipping a serving personnel.
So, having tipped a fair bit already, am I still expected to tip the cage? I really don't know. They do have a grey box right at the front of the cage labelled "tips for cashier". It is not subtle at all. I play occasionally at another venue where there is one dealer who says every second hand "tip the dealer". I still tip because it is shared but if I knew it was going directly to her, I would not tip because of that comment over and over.
You can not see in the cylinder so I have no idea whether others are tipping or not.
So, I am eager to be told. What is the etiquette for tipping the cashier cage?
