Two Charged After Crestview Drug Raid

Two Winnipeggers face drug charges after police raided a Crestview home and a storage locker linked to the two.  At the Crestview home, police seized an ounce of cocaine, $30,000 cash, a half ounce of meth, ammunition, and drug packing material.  In their storage locker, police found a kilogram each of fentanyl and meth, as well as 20 ounces of cocaine.

It must be so frustrating for those fighting the war on drugs.  This seems like a significant amount of drugs to me, yet it only made page B3.  The male charged with many crimes also faced charges for violating probation orders.  So, this was not his first tangle with the law.  The police must sometimes feel like they are playing whack-a-mole.  They take some drugs off the street and it emerges elsewhere.

The aspect of the story that shocked me was that it occurred in Crestview.  That is virtually the same neighbourhood where they are constructing the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre.  I had been led to believe, by those in opposition of the Centre, that there was no substances whatsoever in the area.  I had been led to believe that substance abuse didn't occur in the area and there was certainly no street drugs available for purchase.

It is difficult to reconcile the two conflicting view points.  Is it possible that people who professed there were no substances in their neighbourhoods just had their heads in the sand?  Is it possible that substance abuse happens in all neighbourhoods and doesn't discriminate on the basis of any socio-economic factors including geography?

Thank goodness, the BORC Foundation persevered over many hurdles to build the Centre which will help countless males who have lost control of their lives to addiction and are willing to do the hard work to reclaim their lives.  And, like addiction, the Centre won't discriminate as to whom it accepts for service as long as they want help.  Ironically, some of the people who claim there is no drugs in their area may become some of the people in recovery.

The legal system can only do so much.  The current mental health system can only do so much.  It is a beautiful thing that a new Recovery Centre is only a matter of time.
