It seems to be starting.....

Trump has been raging about a trade war with Canada for a while.  We have put up a brave front that we are not scared of his bullying.  That we are a great country and that everyone wants to do business with us so "bring it on".  That we have the moral authority on our side and we are ready.  We are not concerned with what that blow hard says.

Unfortunately, we may actually have something to be concerned about.  There are subtle little signs that we may not fully realize what we are getting into.  Our local cost of living seems to be increasing.  All bills seem to be going up for some reason.  It is starting to add up.  Interest rates will be rising.

The former Kinder Morgan pipeline, now the Canadian Govt pipeline seems to be a big disaster.

Every second day, Canada Revenue is putting out news releases.  Earlier this week, this said they had something like $4.6 Billion in outstanding taxes due to be collected but they could not due to lack of enforcement staff.   Today, they announced that people with off shore accounts are owing approximately $8B in unpaid taxes.  I have never seen Canada Revenue so desperate to collect money.

Yesterday, Trump participated in a campaign style rally in Fargo, North Dakota to rally his base against Canada.  He said that Canadians are ripping off the Americans of prescription medicine.  A Globe columnist wrote that this allegation is largely true.

One of the most disturbing things about this rally was the interview of a 22 year old Winnipeger who had been up for 36 hours in order to get a great seat to see his hero, Trump.  He seemed like an intelligent nice young man, yet, he was buying everything Trump was saying.  It is disturbing because perhaps we are not united as Canadians against Trump.

During the original Free Trade negotiations, then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney claimed that Canada got a great deal courtesy of his close and special relationship with then President Ronald Reagan.  We didn't believe him then.  Trump is now saying that the deal that we currently have is very in favour of Canada.  Perhaps?  He also says that will end as he is America First.

Protectionism, as an economic policy, which is what Trump is projecting, I think, seldom works, however, the US economy does have the luxury of being the largest in the world.  Who knows?  It looks like Trump is determined to try.

Our dollar keeps going down, our stock exchange is going in the wrong direction.  No signs for panic, yet.

We all know the best way to deal with a bully is to stand up to him.  I think we are committed to doing this, but we don't know the extent that we will have to.  Everyone always cheers for David against Goliath.  I think Canada will need these cheers.
