USA Withdraws from UN Commission on Human Rights
USA United Nations Ambassador Nicki Halley announces the withdrawal of the US from the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
Hard to know where to start on this one.......
Interesting timing. Apparently, the "official" reason is something about Egypt. To the cynics in the world, one thinks this may have something to do with the US separating children from their parents at border crossings and this gives the US no credibility to lecture other nations about human rights.
It could also mean that the US no longer has a commitment to human rights. Yes, there are abuses of human rights throughout the world. No country comes out spotless in this one, however, I think the most powerful nation in the world should still think that human rights are important enough to be at the table when discussed by the UN. There is no guarantee of success moving forward on these issues even if the US is represented, but there is also no chance of moving forward if the US in not represented.
It is hard to watch the news these days. It is hard to read the President's tweets. I mean it is always hard to read his tweets, but these days, it is especially hard. He referred to the immigrants as law breakers who want to infest his country. Whenever you reduce people to insects that are going to infest, you are dehumanizing people. Look to history and see what has come from referring to a select group of humans as not human. It is not pretty.
The rhetoric on both sides is inflammatory and not helping.
Late breaking news as I type is that Health and Human Services Secretary is drafting Emergency Legislation to end the separation of children from their families. So, apparently, there was a solution all a long. Of course, you know who has to spend a minute reading it and then signing it. Let's hope he signs and then let's hope Air Force One is grounded so that he can't retract his signature while in an airplane. I know. I'm sounding paranoid and a little bit loony. It is not like the President would ever retract his signature after he has already signed something.
