Disney's Brave New World
Disney has alluded to a gay character in their new soon to be released movie, Beauty and the Beast. I say alluded because they haven't gone right out and said that Le Fou is gay, however, in approximately 5 seconds of the movie, there is a scene that indicates that Le Fou is gay. How brave of Disney to be such a trailblazer. A whole 5 seconds.
The only thing newsworthy in this story for me is that this is Disney's first gay character. I always thought those two on the Lion King. No? I guess they may still be in the closet.
I thought we were over this. I thought we all accepted that homosexuality exists in all facets of society, and I thought we were ok with that. What we didn't want was people denying who they were.
I also thought that no one actually believed that this was an infection that could be contagious. So, I am a little baffled why Disney is waffling on this. I think they should be proud to have a gay character, even if he is the villain. Quelle drole.
It is no surprise that their are protesters in the midwest refusing to show the movie at their drive-inns so as to not turn their whole town gay over a 5 second scene. It is not a surprise to us that bigotry and hatred exists among us. Apparently, some Christian communities think this is worth of their time and energy.
However, Disney, for shame. If anyone, a leader in the entertainment industry, should be able to handle this protest and stand up for their art. Disney, show some class. Show some leadership.
Lead the cheers:
Le Fou
He's here.
He's queer.
Get Used to it !!!
