International Day of Happiness
Apparently, this is a thing. I saw it on facebook so it must be true !!
So, now we need a day to tell us to be happy? They really should give us a little more notice. I needed advance notice in order to prepare.
Just kidding. I believe happiness is largely a choice.
Exhibit A. Newfies. People from Newfound/Labrador. Have you ever met someone from Newfoundland/Labrador that hasn't been the nicest person, ever? Every Newfie is so nice and so happy. Oh, their likely is one or two grumpy person on the rock, but, for the most part they are amazing. They are proud of their arrange, their accent, their screech, their lifestyle, etc. Well, let's look objectively. It is a pretty desolate place and they have had traditionally hard lives. But, don't tell them that. Newfoundland pride is something pretty special. I think Bob Cole described it best. Before the 2017 Brier, he was asked about the pressure on the Gushue team. Bob Cole replied that the whole Province couldn't love the four men of the Gushue team any more than they already did, and win or lose, they were going to continue to love this team. How happy is that? And, I believe he was sincere. And, their happiness has spread. Newfoundland/Labrador has become an incredible tourist destination. And, I love their slogan, Come to the place where there is nothing to do. How happy is that? I remember going to St. John's almost 30 years ago. I didn't find it that "quaint" but now after seeing and experiencing their happiness, now, I look at pieces of rock and I want to go there !!!
Exhibit B. We all have facebook friends that we want to delete because they are just so darn happy. It is like the reverse of watching a train wreck. We want to delete them, but we just can't help following them. It is really hard to believe that they are that happy !! But, it turns out that most of them really are that happy. As annoying as it is for us, it works for them and the more they are happy, the more happiness they have. They seem to attract happiness. Good things seem to happen for them. And, you know what, the more they post of their happiness, I actually become happy for them, And then I become happy !!!
So, look for what is right in your life, and in your day. The more you look, the more you will find. The more you find, the happier you will be.
Wouldn't it would be great if we turned International Day of Happiness into International Year of Happiness. I think we can. Everyday we hear of people being "against" something. Politics springs to mind. Everyone seems to be against everything, we seem to lose our ability to know what we want since we are conditioned to be against.
Let's start a happiness revolution. Premier Brian Pallister is holding out on signing an agreement with the Federal Government for health care. Every other province and territory has signed on. The politicos can't really figure out why he is against this. So, my message to the Premier is to just let go and accept. It really is simple. In the words of the immortal philosopher Bobby McFerrin, "Don't worry, be happy."
