Good Morning Winnipeg !!

I like watching Global Winnipeg in the morning for the local news.  I could watch other stations, but I really like Shannon Cuciz.  I think she is genuine and welcoming.   I like her style of interviewing and I have enjoyed watching her evolve and gain confidence.

Today's news was particularly disturbing because of two stories.

The first one warned viewers of a scam being perpetrated in Winnipeg.  Apparently, someone bought a PlayStation on kijiji for $200 and instead of getting the Play Station, they received a bag of empty binders.  We saw an excerpt from the police news conference where we warned about this scam.   Also, there was a security camera picture of the perpetrator entering an apartment building.  What a waste of time and energy.   You can't go on a single buy-sell site without seeing warning everywhere not to hand over any money until you determine that the goods you are receiving is as described.  We shouldn't waste the police and media time by having them to repeat that warning which is simple common sense.  A scam actually targets a subgroup of people in society.  They usually pick a group in society that is particularly vulnerable, such as the elderly with little social supports.  Since the "perp" was selling a video game system on-line, he obviously wasn't targeting the elderly.  He has targeting people obviously void of common sense.  What's next?  Will the media cover a news conference of the police instructing the public not to leave large bags of cash on their front lawn unattended?

The second story involved replaying a Facebook Live video of a couple driving a truck over melting Lake Winnipeg.  Some people saw this video with horror as they were obviously doing something risky.  I watched the video with disgust as they were obviously doing something incredibly stupid for the sake of publicity.  Apparently, no one could predict this but the truck went through the ice.   The couple were rescued by the witnesses they had so they are alright.  Talk about irresponsible journalism.   Why would you possibly give these "thrill seekers/media whores" time on air?  What they did was dangerous and could have been extremely expensive to tax payers.  Unfortunately, this will likely trigger copy cats who want to get on the news.  They may not drive across a melting lake but they will likely do something equally stupid.  The news should not be a forum for people who lack basic common sense.

To clarify, a news story occurs when something actually happens.
