Things can't possibly get any worse......
This morning I was watching the morning news and they were talking about a new study coming out of Harvard University. Apparently, when you think, "things can't possibly get any worse", you should actually envision things getting worse. Apparently, that will make you feel about your situation comforted that things are not that bad, and they could get worse. One of the news anchors said that he used that technique and said it worked for him. Another anchor said that she would be scared to that because then she would fear that things would get worse.
It reminded me of one of my favorite books of all time. The Secret. According to Chapters during my last visit, it is celebrating its ninth year of release. Alright, I have a little confession. I've never read the whole book. It is a horrible read. I have made probably a thousand attempts but just can never get through it. Even though I haven't read it, it still is one of my favorite books. Because, I have read enough to know what the Secret is, and that has made a huge difference in my life.
The secret is basically the law of attraction. The law of attraction is that basically whatever energy you are choosing to focus on and send out to the universe will be the energy that will come back to you.
The secret works in almost every aspect of life. Some people call it visioning.
So, if you are deeply in debt. Don't focus on the debt. That will bring more debt into your life. Focus on your life without debt.
If you are part of a competitive sports team, don't focus on how powerful the opponent is that you are facing. They will overpower you. Focus instead on how good it will feel when you win.
If you are nervous about a job interview, don't focus on gossip you may have heard like that they already have a candidate in mind, focus instead of doing the work, interacting with your new colleagues, and enjoying the challenge.
If you are having problems in a relationship, don't think that a break-up is inevitable. Think instead of celebrating a relationship milestone together and how good that will feel.
It is the old adage. If you are looking for what is right, you will find it. If you are looking for what is wrong, you will find it.
If you need to lose weight, don't focus on how heavy you feel. Focus instead on how good you are going to feel and look once you get back in your skinny jeans.
If you focus on what is wrong in your life, you will attract more of that into your life. If you focus on being grateful for what is right in your life, more right will happen for you.
Do you feel like you are surrounded by Debbie Downers? Take a look in the mirror. Maybe you are the one who is attracting these people in your life. Start being positive and soon you will be surrounded by positive people.
Success begets success. Failure, well, I don't want to focus on that.
It seems so simple, but it really works. And, it is not simple. It is hard not to lose sleep over our problems sometimes. It is hard to focus solely on the solution and not live in the present. It is hard to really believe that this "positive thinking" is the key to living well. It is hard to let go of things and just turn them over to the universe. It takes another thing. It takes a leap of faith.
