Mourneau should have stayed; Trudeau should have resigned
First of all, I don't believe that Justin Trudeau should be Prime Minister right now. He has proven that he is not "feminist in chief". Letting go of two of the most talented Ministers in public office was unforgivable. It doesn't speak to his policies but it speaks volumes about his character. I don't think I can forgive him for his "blackface" incidents. I might have been more forgiving of his apology if he hadn't made it in front of Winnipeg Liberal candidates. I remember watching and seeing Doug Eyolfson and Robert-Falcon Oulette behind him. We never heard that the Liberal candidates wanted to be there, so I am assuming they were forced to be there. That was one thing that Trudeau should have handled alone. The only way he could be re-elected was because he was running against Scheer. He was given a minority government.
Regardless, when the pandemic hit, I put all this aside as I was going to support our leaders no matter what. I randomly tweeted him most days "thanks for all you are doing for us".
Once the re-opening reached Stage 4, I am back to judging him and it is not positive. First of all, the use of prerogative of parliament is a very big deal. Central to the Canadian democracy is the function of a duly elected opposition. Right now, the Conservatives are in position to offer any opposition, so why would he need to use the prerogative of parliament. It is a huge red flag that Trudeau is able to do whatever he wants without any oversight of the opposition. It is a little scary and precedents show that we should all be worried.
Also, it appears Gov Gen. Payette was not fully vetted for her ability to work with others and for public service before she was recommended as the Queen's representative. That speaks to his history of white privilege. He wanted our GG to be a "name" rather than someone who was actually interested in the job. If we weren't so busy trying to keep ourselves safe from the virus, this might actually be a full-blown Constitutional crisis.
His apparent misunderstanding of "ethics" is further fodder to his character.
Mourneau is "Richy-Rich" rich. Like he can write a cheque for millions without even thinking it will bounce. A man who understands how to make money which is exactly who we need as a finance minister. Even though he is "Richy-Rich" rich, he still knows how much a loaf of bread is because we have all seen him hard at work trying to bring compassionate financial relief to Canadians. He doesn't need the Finance Minister salary and took a huge pay-cut to serve us with grace and dedication. I believe his first ethics violation was an innocent mistake. He was sacrificed so Trudeau could demonstrate that he learned something.
Trudeau has admitted that he knew that the WE charity administering a program for students was likely wrong but did not rise to the level of sin. What does that even mean?
But, the appointment of Chrystia Freeland as Finance Minister says an incredible amount about Trudeau's character. Hon. Freeland is one of the most capable Ministers and one of the most trusted Canadians. We believe her and we respect her. Her popularity eclipses Trudeau's. I think he is jealous. So, now he is setting her up to fail. She is certainly capable but has no finance experience. No doubt she can learn her role but it will be a steep learning curve. Also, there is no doubt that the new budget will have to make provisions to try and recoup some of the government spending during the pandemic. That means raising taxes. That is never popular. Did he appoint her just to boost his own popularity by bringing her down?
We will have to wait and see.
