The Business of Government

In Manitoba, when you turn 50 years old, you start getting notices that you need to start screening for certain types of cancer.  This likely happens in other jurisdictions as well.  When you first get one of these notices, you are conflicted.  It is a little big brotherish that there is a data base somewhere tracking you but on the other hand, you are grateful that someone is looking out for you.

I am fairly certain that this didn't start when Pallister became Premier and I am also fairly certain that it won't stop if he ceases to be Premier.

This is an example of the business of government.  Regardless of who is in power, government marches on.  I think it is also worthy to point out that in this case, the government also benefits when people take advantage of these screening tools.  Early detection and treatment saves lives and thousands of dollars to our health care system.  It is in everyone's best interest.to take advantage of this.

I only mention this because government departments are constantly looking for ways to be more efficient or for ways to serve us more efficiently.  This is non-partisan.  A few weeks ago, a list of Trump accomplishments were circultating on social media.  The list, indeed, was impressive and probably had 1000 items on it.  But, when looking at the list, you can see that the vast majority of items was essentially the business of government and would have happened regardless of who was President.

We saw an example of such this week.  Trump signed into law something to do with National Parks.  It was a photo opportunity and he read from a script.  That is when he said Yo-semites, so pretty obvious that he had not even read the script let alone had any role in this Act.

It is almost worse that he takes credit for things that he has had nothing to do with.  Should I say, his administration.  It is his administration that is keeping track of these things.

Regardless, I think he has enough to brag about on the things that he actually does.  Like increasing tariffs on Canadian aluminum by 10% because he is tired of Canada taking advantage of the US.  I was asked on one of my chat groups if the majority of Canadians despise Trump for these new tariffs.  I don't pretend to speak for all Canadians, but, I do have an opinion.  I don't think these new tariffs will move the needle on Canadian's view of Trump.  There are some who like him a lot and some who despise him.  The ones who despise him do so because he is in idiot and a narcissist.

Canada:  Taking Advantage of USA since 2017.  I wish we could put that on our licence plates.
