When People Tell You Who They Are, Believe Them........
My partner went out this week with one of his girlfriends. Yes, he has friends that are girls. I encourage those relationships. On this particular date of his, they went out for wings. His date actually wanted me to attend. I didn't go but not for the reason she thought.
I knew I would get some take-out out of it and I was not disappointed. Hot wings. Slathered in hot sauce. My lips are still burning. And, it was so much better eating alone where I could devour it and get it all over myself. Amazing wings. There are some things that are just better eaten in your pjs alone without worrying about basic social graces.
It reminded me of a time a few years ago when I went out with a boyfriend for wings. Yes, I have male friends. This particular one is no longer a friend and it was because he told me that evening who he was.
So, anyone who has gone out for wings in the last decade knows that you have lots of options for sauce. So, while I was looking at the menu for options, this guy orders for us and then says, make sure they are extra crispy.
First of all, this wasn't a date, it was more like a business discussion. He did not ask for my input on food that I was going to eat. How arrogant. Complete disregard for me. He didn't say that outwardly but that is what he was saying by doing this.
I tried to think of the last time someone ordered for me. Maybe my dad before I was old enough to read a menu.
So, these wings came and they were extra-crispy. Do you know what extra-crispy chicken wings are? Dry ribs. I understood why he didn't need input on what sauce to order because it didn't matter. Unrecognizable pieces of bone that are charred beyond recognition and have no flavour. No use in bringing us wetnaps. The only person who would eat these would be someone who doesn't like wings.
I don't think he even noticed that I tried one and that was it. So wrapped up in himself. But, as I watched him, I began to feel sorry for him. His arrogance was just masking his insecurity. He really didn't want to get sauce all over himself. So worried about maintaining his perfect facade that he ended up sacrificing a friend.
People are always telling you who they are. Believe them. Especially, before you cast a ballot.
