And on Nursing Week. No Less !!

It is Nursing Week, a time to reflect on the hard work that Nurses do everyday and to spend the week thanking them for that work.  Often when we see Nurses, it is not the best day of our life, and we are stressed and perhaps don't appreciate their work as much as we should.

I have been fortunate enough to work with some extraordinary Nurses.  I know they are not thanked enough for all that they do.  I do believe that I have met atleast 500 Nurses in my life.  That is quite a lot and if you are going to have a sample size of that amount, you can probably deduce that there are 1 or 2 bad apples.  Of course, that is just my opinion.

However, a Nurse from Saskatchewan lost a very important battle yesterday and the implications are awful for all of us.   In essence, this Nurse lost her freedom of speech to raise questions about health care.  It is an extremely sad day in Canada, and on Nursing Week, no less.

Carolyn Strom is a young Nurse from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.  In 2016, she was likely very idealistic.  I think since that time she has aged considerably.  Back to 2016, her grand-father was receiving end-of-life care in a different community than the one she practices in.

I have worked for over a decade in a personal care home.  Believe me, when you visiting a loved one who is dying, it doesn't matter what you do for a living.  You could be a surgeon, a nurse, a psychologist, or a rocket scientist.  It doesn't matter when someone you love is dying.  You are just a loved one wrought with grief.

So, this young Nurse was visiting her grandpa, not as a Nurse, but as a grand-daughter.  She liked some of the care and had concerns with other aspects of the care.

She did what most young people do.  She took to social media to express her frustration.  She didn't name anybody and her post was rather tame compared to many I have read.

The next thing she knew she was under investigation from the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association for professional misconduct.  Unbelievably, she was found guilty and fined $26,000 which amounted to the cost of their investigation and hearing.

She appealed to the Saskatchewan High Court and yesterday, it was confirmed that she lost her appeal.  Basically the ruling said that they didn't feel they had the authority to challenge the Association's rulings.

It is a sad day.  Certainly sad for the Nurse but sad for all of us.  Freedom of speech took the biggest hit and that affects us all.
