Weinstein Surrenders on Sex Charges
What delightful breaking news this morning. I turned on the television just in time to watch the disgraced monster walk into a Manhatten police department.
Apparently, he is facing criminal charges from two different women. New York and Los Angeles Police continue to investigate and convene grand juries so hopefully there are more charges forthcoming.
He has already negotiated his bail package which will be 1 million dollars; surrendering of passport; and requirement to wear an ankle bracelet. Apparently, he is prepared to post this bail as he arrives. There were many reporters to witness this scene, and I hope they hunt him down to find where he has been hiding for the last several months.
This seems so unsatisfying. A million dollar bail which he has already negotiated and is prepared to post. All that is going to happen to him this morning is that he will be finger printed. How intrusive and uncomfortable for him.
Hopefully, this is not a pointless exercise and justice will prevail. I am hopeful but not particularly optimistic.
The reality is that he has had many accusers. So far, two criminal charges. He has tremendous financial resources to hire the best legal counsel there is.
Bill Cosby had over 50 accusers and faced two charges as well. First trial ended in mistrial. Second trial results in conviction and he is still awaiting sentence while he lives in luxury while only wearing an ankle bracelet. He is an old man and looks very pathetic. That will be taken into account. He might end up spending a month in jail.
No wonder that so many victims are reluctant to come forward. Victims are being brave to publicly accuse and face the shame of that. Unfortunately, our injustice system (not a typo) is very slow and unsatisfying to victims.
Thanks to #MeToo, many have come forward. Employment has been forever changed and it will never be ok to exert power over another. Consent is another thing that has been changed and how that is handled. Many systems will be forever changed.
The last component left to catch up to society is the justice system. We can't believe we are powerless to change this system. We owe to the brave men and women who have come forward as victims. We need to put pressure on our lawmakers. We need to support judicial reform publicly. We need to do everything we can to ensure that victims don't just relive their pain, but feel some sort of closure.
We need to ensure that the Harvey Weinsteins of the world face more intrusive punishment that just being fingerprinted.
