Social Graces Part 2

Just a couple of days ago, I was talking about my friend Donna and her lack of social graces.

A video taken on a phone has just gone viral and it wasn't my friend, but, it could have been.  It was a lady at a public pool filled with children.  She was sitting on the ladder and was shaving her legs.  Yes.  Dipping the razor in the pool and shaving her legs.  Yes.  Dipping the razor in the pool, which was filled with children, and shaving her legs.  It was gross.

It is possible that she didn't know any better.  But, she did know how to shave her legs.  Something my friend Donna didn't know.  So, she must have known better.  I don't know.  Do you have to tell someone not to shave their legs in a public pool or is this something we are all supposed to know?

Is it the pool's fault.  They usually post warning signs like:  no running, no diving, no children under 10 unattended.  Do they need to add no shaving?

One thing is for sure about this lady, she has no friends.  A friend would not let another friend do this.

Another thing for sure is that this woman will be forever humiliated and will be the butt of jokes for a long time.  She may never recover emotionally.

One thing my friend Donna had over this poor woman is context.  Believe me, my friend did equally appalling stuff but I stopped her when I could.  Also, she was the town rebel at the time the small town needed shaking up.  Most of her "antics" were taken as deliberate examples of her wanting to stir things up and challenge authority.  The town really had no idea that she was doing them innocently and not making a point.

It is hard to imagine a context where it would be ever appropriate to shave your legs in a public pool, however, thanks to social media, we have short clips without any context.  It leads up to many judgments.  Some may be true.  Some may not.  It is possible, although admittedly highly unlikely, that the actual blade was taken out of this razor and this woman just had electrolysis and was very itchy and found this to be the most efficient to scratch her itch.  Admittedly, I have no idea.  But,  you don't either.  \\

Social media has done wonders to advance the concept of the global village.  However, is it possible that we might be a more tolerant society without social media?  People tend to look for evidence to confirm rather than refute our theses.  So, if we tend to think, for example, that all fat women are lazy, we can find tons of social media to support this notion.  Or, if we think all hockey players are stupid, we can find tons of social media to support this notion.  Or, if we think the reverse, we can find lots of information to refute these notions.

I don't know this woman or anything about her.  Unfortunately, this public shaming may leave her demoralized and depressed for the rest of her life.  Or, she could have enough self-esteem and self-confidence that this public shaming won't affect her at all.  Yeah, I don't believe that either.
