7 more weeks until Parliament is Dissolved

Today was the start of the Spring Session in Parliament.  Members of Parliament will be back on the Hill for 7 weeks.  Then, summer break and a fall election.  This is an important day in Ottawa and for the country.  MPs have had a break to meet with their constituents and caucus together.  They are getting for the election.  In my riding, three candidates have already been chosen.  All three are excellent candidates.  I have a lot to think about.   But, today, is an important day because the major Parties get to test drive their key messages for the campaign.

I don't know much about politics but I am a voter.  Here is my two cent analysis of the messages of how they landed.

Andrew Scheer spoke about the crisis for canola farmers.  He offered a three point plan on what he would do to help.  I liked that.  It was specific and positive.  He is obviously trying to get back the prairies.  He pivoted from that to foreign policy.  Here it comes, the attack.  Yes, he did point out the blunders in Trudeau's foreign policy but also offered a positive alternative.  I give him a B+.

The Liberals were next.  The Prime Minister did not speak and sent his Finance Minister and his Environment Minister to do the talking to the media.  That is a bad sign.  Obviously, Justin didn't want to face the press on his own.  Catherine McKenna hasn't done a great job managing her portefolio and has been much maligned.  Having her front and centre as the face of Liberals is not a good sign.  Obviously, the Liberals are still trying to hang on that they are the party of feminists.  Most governments tout their own accomplishments.  Not this one.  The message was that Andrew Scheer promised an environmental plan a year ago.  The year is up and where is it?  That is a great sign for the Conservatives.  The Liberals are perceiving themselves threatened and already on the negative attack.  The Liberals are in trouble.  Today, their performance gets a C- from me.

Finally, Jagmeet Singh.  He indicated the previous day that his agenda would be housing, pharmacare, and a green plan.  Yet, when he was speaking today.  He was on the attack of the Liberals.  The NDP is trying to take advantage of Liberal woes.  His three-legged stool platform is a good one.  He should stick to the positive.  Trudeau doesn't need any help in pointing out his missteps. If he stays on point, Singh will definitely be a force to be reckoned with.  If he goes off script and on the attack like he did today, he will continue to get a B- from me.

The writ has not been dropped but it is election season.  It is going to be a good one.
