Albertans Head to the Polls

Albertans will be deciding on a new government today.  Meanwhile, my grandson is lucky that he only has to decide which toy to play with first.  I'm glad he doesn't have to think too much because he can't make a wrong choice.  There are only good options for him.

For Albertans, not so much.

25 candidates election campaign's were involved in political scandals.  2 scandals caused 2 candidates to withdraw before the nomination meetings.  All three parties, the United Conservative Party, the Alberta Advantage Party, and the NDP had scandals.  However, in fairness, the scandals of the NDP candidates seemed to be the least in terms of effecting voters.

It could be a function of our digital lives and that everyone's life is on display on social media.  Even those that think they don't have a social media presence are kidding themselves.  Everyone has done things that they regret and it is actually surprising that there aren't more scandals.  The result of this is that it is harder to get good people to run.  Many don't want to expose themselves and their families to such scrutiny.

However, if you look down South, you will see a record number of Democrat candidates wanting to run for President, so hopefully, we can feel somewhat comforted that people who sincerely want to do good for others will still have an interest in running.

Rachel Nottley has done a good job putting her heart and soul out there to represent Alberta's interests.  She likely won't be rewarded for doing such.

Many of the UCP candidates have had controversies that you would expect from the far right.  Insensitive and dangerous comments against homosexuality and other groups.  One hopes that these comments were at a different time when people didn't know better.  Let's hope they now know better.  Otherwise, Jason Kenney will have a hard time filling his cabinet.  This is if the polls are accurate.

Speaking of Jason Kenney, he is also involved in a scandal.  He is still being accused of colluding with another candidate in his 2017 leadership race.  The election commissioner is still investigating and the RCMP have confirmed that they are also investigating activities outside the scope of the election commissioner.

That is actually mind-blowing to me.  The RCMP are investigating a man who may be Premier of a Province of Canada.  They are investigating activities he may or may not have participated in to be elected leader of his Party.  Makes you wonder what activities he would engage in to become Premier.

Good luck, Alberta.
