Some Sort of Football Game on Tonight

Tonight, they will be televising the opening game of the National Football League.  Apparently, the NFL is losing its audience slowly but steadily over the last decade.

Tonight, the NFL might get a record audience to put them back to their glory days.  It will be must see tv.  But, the game will actually be the third reason that they will be tuning in.

The first reason will be the official launch of the Nike "Just Do It" 30th anniversary commercial.  Unless you have been living in a cave, you are familiar with this ad.  It is a brave ad.  Nike realizes that it will lose money in the short-term, but that is ok with them.  They are playing the long game and they think Colin Kapernick stands for the values that they would like the new generation to transcend.

The ad was shown on UTube and in the twitterverse yesterday.  It has mixed reviews and is polarizing already.  It is either inspiring or infuriating.  It also has some Canadian content featuring Alphonso Davis.  If that name is unfamiliar to you, check him out or just wait.  This soon-to-be Canadian hero is destined for greatness.

So, the ad itself will cause millions turning in to watch.  The second big thing to watch will be the National Anthem.  Apparently, the NFL is in negotiation with the players for guidelines on how they can "take a knee" during the anthem.  One suggestion was that players who don't want to stand at attention stay in the locker room for the playing on the Anthem.  Another idea is that they won't be punished if they just locked arms.  The NFL has itself in a pickle.  The funny thing is that they are not in a power position anymore in these negotiations.  Apparently, you can take a knee and have a good life after that.

Oh, also, there is also going to be some guys in two different uniforms running around trying to catch a pigskin.  That is on tv tonight as well.
